At the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, BMW first unveiled their ambitious plans for a turbo-diesel model called the i8.

Two years later, the i8 reappeared in the form of a gas-powered concept vehicle that would soon be headed for BMW production facilities.

Now, in 2013 the annual Motor Show season is beginning once more and BMW is planning to display their innovative new plug-in hybrid version of the i8, which BMW is billing as the first true hybrid supercar. Even more exciting? BMW is anticipating that the U.S. will be the highest-demanding market for these awe-inspiring models.

Hendrik Wenders, BMW's head project manager for the i8, recently told German-language auto publication Automotive News Europe that they expect sales to be highest in their highly-coveted US markets, with the United Kingdom and Germany rounding out the top three.

After BMW debuts the i8 at the Frankfurt Motor Show and others, the next step is a huge 50-country inventory roll out, which is scheduled to take place very early next year. In terms of specific numbers for sales forecasts, BMW is remaining hush-hush, but given the recent increases in demand for fuel-efficient and eco-friendly vehicles, we think they're high forecasts (whatever they may be) will prove correct.
