For many years now, the automotive industry's most innovative minds have mulled over the prospect of self-driving vehicles. At present, several of the world's automakers are working on autonomous driving technologies, and here at Hendrick BMW, we're proud to say that BMW is right in the thick of things. With so many impressive options in the lineup of new BMW vehicles like the BMW 1 Series and BMW 6 Series, Charlotte area drivers already have a lot to love. But could you imagine the results of a truly autonomous vehicle in the lineup?
BMW is teaming with Continental, a company known for its tire and car technology, to develop a three-pronged plan for achieving the goal of an autonomous vehicle by 2025. The first step, will be to have a partially automated offering by 2106. This vehicle will need some control from the driver at low speeds.
The next goal is called "highly automated," and we're sure a host of new, advanced BMW parts will do their part in this 2020 release, that will only require drivers to be aware in certain situations.
The stated goal for 2025 is to have a vehicle that is fully automated, without a need for monitoring or a driver takeover in city or highway driving.
