At Hendrick BMW, we've written about the new BMW three-cylinder engines coming to the greater Charlotte area in the future. Today on our blog, we'd like to pay tribute to another powerful engine in the new BMW lineup: the 12 cylinder engine.

Introduced in 1987, the BMW 750i was the first recipient of the unique powertrain. Back then, the 12 cylinder engine pumped out 300 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. Today? Well, it's gotten better with age. Found on the BMW 760Li, the engine produces 535 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque.

So what else accompanies this 12 cylinder found on the BMW 760Li? Plenty.

The engine has a displacement of 6.0 liters and uses 48 valves, four per cylinder. The BMW 12 cylinder engine also boasts dual overhead camshafts per cylinder bank, and comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Not only that, but the 12 cylinder engine has a sibling in terms of design, as both it and the N62 V-8 are modeled on the same platform.
