In an effort to put its best foot forward in regards to efficiency, BMW has taken a big step forward with the introduction of three-cylinder engines on the new I-3 model. But, the biggest questions we, and other luxury car drivers in the greater Charlotte area have is, will the I-3 be making its way to America?
At Hendrick BMW, we're happy to say the answer is yes. Even better, we will get to see this three-cylinder engine make its way on to more than one new BMW models. The smaller powertrain is expected to find its way on to the BMW i8 sports car, among others. Also, BMW has stated that several hybrid models planned for the future will be built using this three-cylinder engine as a base.
The new BMW engine has many of the same characteristics of the 3.0-liter six-cylinder option in the BMW lineup, but the I-3 has its own personality. It's got style both inside and out, and its performance will certainly surprise many, as they won't think they are driving in a three-cylinder vehicle.
The three-cylinder engine isn't the only thing that's a first on the I-3 either. The new luxury compact is also one of the vehicles the automaker selected for its foray in to front-wheel drive as well. However, those who love the thrill of rear-wheel drive, fear not, BMW officials say that a rear-wheel drive I-3 could be offered some time in the future too.
