BMW has a 42-year history of successfully producing performance-minded M models, and they have a band of loyal followers to back it up. While they've been through decades of transformation, it wasn't until 1979 that the M product became into what it is today.


The BMW Motorsport GmbH subsidiary was established to create a racetrack presence for the luxury brand. The 3.0CSL homologation special was the automaker's first successful racing project, and it helped to establish the company as a producer of automotive athletes.


When BMW introduced the M models to the public, they started with the M1, which was a little too racetrack-inclined to be driven on city streets. By 1979, the M nameplates became modified versions of the BMW standard Series cars, beginning with the souped up 5-Series sibling, the M535i.


And the rest, as they say, is recent history. The M lineup has stirred up a dedicated fan club, and BMW fan Amin Kassam is one of them. He's on his way to pick up his fifth and sixth M car, and we're along for the ride in the video below:
