Now that the 2012 Summer Olympics have come to a close, we here at Hendrick BMW would like to tout a gold medal technology that had nothing to do with something you'd find on a new BMW vehicle here in the greater Charlotte area, rather one that actually helped many swimmers on the United States squad achieve international glory.
Developing a system to analyze swimmers' form and technique in the pool, BMW Group Technology based out of Mountain View, California built a tool for coaches to use and target key areas of improvement. As many swim experts would agree, the dolphin kick is a powerful maneuver for swimmers while they are racing, but trying to figure out which movements help produce a stronger stride and technique was something coaches felt was lacking, which is where the BMW technology comes in and works wonders for the Olympians.
Consider that back in the 1970s, in the era of Mark Spitz, the only way to measure performance was a manual count of kicks and strokes in the pool, so it's a good thing methods have evolved with the help of BMW, whose system allows you to gain data-based insight into all the key parts of the swimmers' bodies, including feet, wrists, toes, and ankles. All told, it can help take fractions of seconds off times, which is the difference between Gold and Silver.
Given the United States' performance in the water, and the expectation that this technology will be adopted by many nations around the world, we can't wait to see what Rio 2016 has in store for us with the technology to aid athlete reach higher levels of achievement.
Of course, high levels of achievement are something that comes standard on all BMW vehicles like the BMW 3 Series and the 328i, which you can find here at Hendrick BMW.
